Kia ora everybody,

As you will see, our whakapapa on this site is still a work in progress - and is likely to remain this way for some time with the current rates of O'Carroll fertility! The site focuses primarily on the descendants of Te Matewhiu but some of her ancestry is included too. Therefore it is primarily about the O'Carroll whanau originating in Tikorangi and Waitara. In its present state, this already involves hundreds of people in only five or six generations removed from Te Matewhiu and is still missing many people. There might by now, be somewhere close to 1000 descendants of Te Matewhiu once they are all entered.

So far I have worked from three main sources. The first is a three sheet hand-written "Otaraua whakapapa" that may not be that accurate. This relates mostly to our Otaraua ancestry prior to Te Matewhiu. (Photos of them are on the site so you can download them). The second is a document that was written by Wesley Carrington (from Whangarei) for the Carrington reunion in 1990 in New Plymouth. This was kindly lent to me by uncle Jim O'Carroll who I believe obtained it from Leo Carrington in Stratford. Because it was produced in 1990 none of the people born since then are in it and are only included in this site if someone has told me about them or I already knew of them. The third source, believe it or not, is Facebook that lots of our younger family members are on. Many of the photos on the site are from this source. A fourth recent (2018) source is Paretutaki Hayward who emailed me having seen Te Rangipakina's name on the site. She provides information from her whakapapa sources back to Te Rangipakina and back three more generations.

None of these sources claims absolute accuracy and when combined with my general knowledge (or lack of it) about our whanau this is likely to produce mistakes and omissions - for which I apologize in advance. I am now having to rely on information from all of you to complete the many missing bits. I have also started to add stories to the site that you can read. If you have stories that you would like to write for the site send them to me and I will add them. I would especially like stories about the Te Matewhiu's children but all contributions are welcome.

If you do spot errors or can help with any of the branches of our whanau could you please let me know so they can be fixed. Also - we especially need details about the current post-1990 generations of O'Carroll's, especially the kids' names, birthdates, partners, digital photos etc. I am also not sure of the proper surnames of many people and have entered what I think they are because this system requires both a first and second name. For the generations prior to Te Matewhiu, many people have only one name so I have added the reo Maori naming prefix of "ko" as the first name. If you have any information, updates or corrections can you please email them to me at peter.adds@icloud.com or ring me at home in Wellington and I will update them as they arrive.

Thanks. And with a bit of luck, we should eventually have a comprehensive O'Carroll whakapapa available for all to see and use - at a possible O'Carroll whanau family reunion some time in the future if we can generate enough interest.

Enjoy your surfing!

Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to the O`Carroll whakapapa website. Check out the new stories section of the site above.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
