Famous Pantings
A former Honduran economic minister who was kidnapped two weeks earlier was found dead, after the family reportedly paid US$125,000 in ransom, reports AP (June 2, 2002). The body of Reginaldo Panting, 71, was discovered on an isolated street in San Pedro Sula, the largest city in northern Honduras. Harry Panting identified the body of his father, who had a nylon rope tied around his neck and his hands bound behind his back. National Police Commissioner Coralia Rivera said that police had searched eight houses over the past two weeks in the hunt for Panting and had arrested two people suspected of belonging to the kidnap gang. Panting was kidnapped on May 18 as he was driving to his house outside San Pedro Sula. Witnesses said seven masked men armed with automatic weapons intercepted Panting and forced him into a stolen luxury car. There have been 213 kidnappings in the past six years in Honduras, most of them in or near San Pedro Sula.
