About Parfrey of Southwest England

** 7 Jun 2021 -- These pages are now expanded to include Parfrey families of London, Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Sussex, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. ============================= In our search for Parfreys out of Norfolk, England, we discovered another pocket of this surname in the Somerset-Gloucestershire counties of England. We have NOT connected this group to our Parfreys in any way. However, the hope has resulted in a great deal of research which we felt could be used by others. The process of acquainting ourselves to these families has resulted in many unanswered questions, particularly on the topic of names. It seems that some groups frequently used different names in different places, so the job of finding them is more difficult. Variations were not limited to surnames. Given names were often somewhat similar, but not quite a match, especially when finding records of Romany births and census records. We have pored over several online sites which explain some of these relationships, and still find ourselves dumbfounded. In addition, surnames can vary from place to place and from census to census. In fact, in one such case, the surname was altered between one page of a census and the next, for the same family - Parfry on the first page, Palfry on the second. Because we are unable to discern the parentage of many family heads, you will find many stand-alone families. They may have many children and marriage offshoots, but no connection to the main tree (Thomas Parfrey, 1770). We have not purchased any official documents, but whenever possible, we have noted the contents of those we find online through subscription. We have not 'sourced' our entries. We find it more enlightening to see all the records together for comparison, so we have transcribed many into Notes for each individual. Census records are usually found under the head-of-household, unless a wife survives him, in which case a census report may have been recorded for her. At last count there were 770 Parfrey/Parffrey individuals planned for in this file. More are being found each day, so check back with us.
