About The Penney and White families
Is our surname PENNEY or is it PENNY?

Grandfather William Penn(e)y was an orphan at the age of 5 and lived with some of his siblings at the Bath Workhouse. He was not sure of his name or date of birth and it was not until he retired for his pension that documents were found and his details discovered. His surname was PENNEY although his children had already been given the surname PENNY. However William's elder brother Sidney had used the name PENNEY when he emigrated to Canada. When William's youngest son Raymond married he used PENNEY on his marriage certificate even though he already had PENNY on his birth certificate as did his siblings. So our English cousins have the surname PENNY and our Canadian cousins have the surname PENNEY.

Before the Victorian age fewer people could read and write and during marriage were required to make a mark to sign the marriage certificate. So the surname was variously recorded as PENNY or PENNEY or PENEY or even PENY. It only depended on how the officiating registrar usually recorded the spelling.
