The JANES family : This family starts with the Janes family of Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland in about 1760 and expands to Harbour Grace, Old Shop, Paradise and Robinsons, Newfoundland. The SMITH family : This family of Bishop's Cove, Newfoundland starts with Abraham Smith in 1779. The BARRETT family : This family starts with John Barrett, who was born in 1680 in Poole, England. It expands to include the large Barrett family of the Bishop's Cove/Spaniard's Bay area of Newfoundland, as well as many other locations. The ASH family : This family starts with John Ash in about 1750 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. The BLAKEY family : This family starts in County Durham, England in the mid 1800's with the enigmatic Joseph Blakey and expands to Barr'd Islands, Newfoundland. Although the name is spread out over 150 years, from the mid 1800's to the present, there were only 23 people born with the Blakey surname during that period. There are now no male Blakey family members remaining to carry on the name in Newfoundland. The COFFIN family : This rather large family starts in South Hampton, England in 1801 with John Coffin and expands to Joe Batt's Arm, Newfoundland, and many other locations. The HEAD family : This family starts in Joe Batt's Arm, Newfoundland with John Head in about 1785. The RANDELL family : This family starts in Fogo, Newfoundland with William Randell in October 1837.
The surname "JANES" is among the many old surnames in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. The earliest Janes that could be connected to this family first appeared in 1804 when John Janes was recorded as a property owner in Bryant's Cove, Newfoundland. The property had been in John's possession since 1765, but was then listed as vacant. John appears to have moved to nearby Upper Island Cove because in the same year, 1804, he is recorded as renting a house and some fishing facilities from a Mr. James Byrn. John's place of birth could not be established but either he or his father is most likely the connection with England. He (or his father) is considered to be the start of the Janes family in Upper Island Cove. On my wife's side of the family, the enigmatic Joseph Blakey started the Blakey family in Newfoundland when he jumped ship in some Fogo Island port in about 1856-1857. He married a widow in 1858, and shortly thereafter he and his new wife started the only Blakey family in Newfoundland. There are now no male Blakey family members remaining.
