About The Guise Family, Southland Branch
The Guise brothers who came to Southland,New Zealand were born and brought up in the neighbouring county of Worcestershire to that of the English manor which is in Gloucestershire and is to be found 5 miles out of Gloucester city.most of our direct family were recorded as being baptised at places such as Worcester, Kidderminster, Upton, Fladbury and Pershore, all of which are very close using todays transport. Original acquisition of Elmore by the Guise family was said to be through Nicholas De Gyse who in 1262 received the manor through his wife, from John De Burgh, son of Hubert, the Earl of Kent, and also received the Lordship of Elmore. The family have held the manor of Elmore in uninterupted line of male succession for 700 years. An important member of the family was John Guise who married Jane Pauncefoot of Hastfield in 1564, for it was he who, up to the time of his death in 1588, was responsible for the reconstruction of the main part of Elmore Court with stone brought from Harescombe castle, the property of De Bohun, Earl of Hereford.More is to be read in Ian Guises book Guise Family A Wider Circle, and I dedicate this site in his memory.
