About Knight and Lyons Family
This is an attempt to document our forebears, who came directly from United Kingdom, Ireland,
Scotland and Germany. A couple came from the UK via America.
In my tree I am only interested in blood relatives of our direct ancestors and those of our
children through marriage so that our grandchildren may have a full family history. To achieve a
manageable tree we tend not go beyond fourth cousins but occasionally have included fifth cousins.
In a few cases a male/female line of "non-blood" ancestors is followed to complete stories arising
from second marriages - as an example Fogarty line is included to account for family from second
marriage of Dorothy's grandmother Isabella Lyra Simpson.
A mixture of a few convicts, whose main crime was petty theft, although one was transported for
life on charge of manslaughter, and numerous free settlers who came mainly from impoverished
backgrounds. They sought a better life for themselves and their children in the great land 'down
under' - (Australia). The convict ancestors turned their hand to hard work and left a legacy of
which we can all be proud. Our ancestors were in the main prolific breeders, although many
children died at birth or in their first few years due to the primitive conditions in which most
of the families lived. So whilst births in excess of 10 per couple were not uncommon, only an
average of 7 made it to adulthood. The record is held by John Stoneham who produced 19 children
from two marriages but only 10 of those lived beyond their early teens.
Whilst a few arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, the majority came to Sydney, New South Wales and
incredibly ventured into far flung areas of the State sometimes taking up to 3 months to reach
the 'inland' on horse and dray 'expeditions'. They made their living chasing gold; opening General
Stores; working as labourers or farm hands; establishing small farming and grazing properties; the
Irish ancestors found work in the coalfields of the Hunter Valley and also as farmers.

The predominant names are Anderson, Attwill/Atwill, Hilton, Knight, Lyon/Lyons, O'Hearn/Ahern, Sattler, Simpson, Stoneham, Thompson, Tibbey and Turton; along with many others who contribute to the tapestry of our ancestors.

Military Service attracted many ancestors with the Stonehams serving in UK forces and East
India Company in the early 1800s; the Turtons with the East India Company and British Military,
later with American forces in the Mexican War. A few served in the Boer War. The first and second
World Wars saw 99 family members, from all lines, serving in the Australian Military Forces,
seventeen paid the ultimate sacrifice - see Honour Roll below which includes family who served in
UK and NZ Military Forces.

Convicts:
The undermentioned family members fell foul of the law in Great Britain and Ireland:
ATWILL, John: (My Great great Grandfather) Tried at Somersetshire for larceny in January
1820 and transported for 7 years aboard the Neptune.
EGAR, Ann: (John's wife, my GG Grandmother) Transported for 7 years in 1829 on board the

SMITH, Mary: (My great great grand aunt - wife of John Stoneham) Sentenced at York, England
in 1829 and transported for 14 years on board the America.

NOTE: Some family names have changed over time in Australia, however the descendant lines
have all been verified against Birth, Death, Marriage and other official records.
It should be noted that a number of the early records have notations "unable to read
or write".
To ensure accuracy the family name shown on original records is used here, and later change is
mentioned on that individual's personal record.
1) ATTWILL Family name is now used however it started as ATWILL and was spelt as ATWELL in
few records.
2) KRAMS Family arrived in Australia as KRAMPS, but adopted Krams after immigration.
3) LYONS is now the family name but started as LYON.
4) O'HEARN came to Australia as Ahern and over the first two generations in Australia the
spelling changed through A'Hern, O'Hearne and O'Hern before the current spelling became “standard”.
Christian Names: The spelling and sometimes reversal of first/second christian names has
also varied through Birth, Marriage, Census and Death records. The variations are noted
on each, however the Birth record name has been used in majority of cases, unless it is clearly a
misspelling/transcription error.
