About Slavid/Taylor Family
Please sign in to see more.
This family tree focuses on two families, the Slavid and the Taylor family.
SLAVID
Five Shliwek,(or Sliwek) brothers; Enoch, Kaufman, Sidney, Mordechai and Saul, and their sister Fanny, born in the Polish town of Krosniewice, (about 66km north of Lodz) immigrated to London in the beginning of the 20th Century. They probably came at different times, but all changed their name to Slavid. All successful tailors, they quickly assimilated into London life, dropping their Yiddish names, marrying and having families.

The family tree becomes a bit complicated, as there was a sixth brother, Isaac or Yitzak, who died in Poland before the brothers immigrated. He had 3 sons and a daughter. One son, also named Yitzak (later Isaac) immigrated to America and settled in California. He eventually changed his name to Irving Slavid (and all these years I thought I was the only "Irving Slavid"). While most of the Slavid family is now based in the London area it has spread to California and Israel.

TAYLOR
The history of pre-Abraham Shneyder is based on the data from the 1866 “All Lithuanian Revision List Database” which is found online. From various official documents we know the mid 19th century location of the family was in Zagare, Russia, (now Lithuania). This knowledge and the fact that there is only one listing in the town of Zagare of brothers with our family names and father named "Wolf" (which is also a family name) supports that this listing is indeed, our family.

This database also noted additional sons of Wolf; Benjamin Shneyder whose family we were aware of and immigrated to the US, and Shakhne Mikhel Shneyder, who we weren’t aware of and have since added to the family tree.

Information about Wolf’s youngest son Noah (later Shein), who is not on the Revision List, was confirmed by other documents and family memories.

The two Taylor brothers, Barnett and his wife Katie, and Isaac with Annie and son Abraham, all immigrated to Edinburgh in 1901 and 1905. Their mother Ellen also immigrated after her husband Abraham died but we do not know when. Whether the families were on route to America or not is unconfirmed.

They moved to Glasgow in c.1912. First settling in the Gorbals area and later to the Queens Park (Battlefield) neighborhood. Each brother had 10 children. The original name was Schnider (Shneyder?), and was changed to Taylor upon arrival in Scotland. Isaac was listed as a 'master’ tailor.

The families of Barnett’s and Isaac’s sister, Frieda has not yet been discovered.

While the majority of Taylors still live in the Glasgow area, the family is also in London, Canada, US, and Israel.
