It difficult to pin down the exact origin of the Popple and whether the it emerged from one source or several.
The word Popple means bubbling, tumbling, flowing .
People of Tadcaster in Yorkshire used the name Popple - Wells when referring to certain spring like icy jets of water that bubbled up through sand in the area. This water source was used by John Smiths Brewery in Tadcaster.
The word also appears in the Yorkshire town name of Poppleton ` is this also a place where there is or once was a Popple - Well.
Popple does I believe appear in England as early as the 15th Century and possibly before then it may have been a nickname, but as yet I have not found any hard evidence to support this myself (Of course that doesn`t mean there isn`t any).
The Popple name appears in parish records for Yorkshire in the mid 16th Century in Hull, Grimsby and towns along the Humber river and the Trent in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
At this time the name Pople was also present in the Parish records in the Southwest of England.(Somerset, Devon and Gloustershire), but there seems to no obvious connection to the Popple name at this time.
Whether or not there is any common connection between Popple and Pople prior to this, I don`t know.
In parish records Popple appears extensively in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Rutland by the early 17th Century and in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire shortly after.
After this time the name has appeared in a most Counties in England, throughout the UK and the rest of the World as far a field as Australia and the USA.
Today I`m sure there are more people living outside of the England named Popple than live there, but even today there still seems a prominence of the name within the original five counties above
The spelling of Popple in Parish and other records vary, particularly in the earlier ones, some examples are Popple Poppell Poppel, Poppil, Popples, Papple, Pople, Popel , Pophole, Popll Poppoll Popley and others |
