About The Vertue Family
Hi, I'm pleased that you have found the Vertue Web Site. Maybe your name is not Vertue, but the chances are you will appear on the Web Site as you have been invited by Sue Peggram and have been given a password. It is a little disconcerting to find your photo and birth details on the internet, but rest assured no-one can get access unless they have the password.
A family tree is always growing and I will welcome details of new additions and likewise corrections for any errors I have made or details that I don't have. If you don't like your displayed photo please send me a replacement that puts you in a good light and I will change it. Also, if you have any legends that will enhance a particular member of the tree I will welcome those.
The following publications maybe of interest:
The Pleasure boatmen of Eastbourne ISBN978-1-85770-333-7
The Fishermen of Eastbourne ISBN978-185770-352-8 both by Ted Hide, S.B. Publications and have been a great source of information regarding the Hides, Huggetts and Simpsons who feature strongly in my tree and are well worth purchasing.
The third book which I have only recently discovered is Spike & Co. by Graham McCann ISBN 978 0 340 89808 6 This will give a good insight how Beryl Johnson (Vertue) became the well known figure she is to-day.
For anyone wishing to read the full daily movements of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards of which Arthur Vertue was Sergeant then 'The Record of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards in the Great War 1914-1918 by Rev. Harold Gibb published in 1925 or the personal account of young Benjamin Clouting who was in the same Troop 'The Teenage Tommy' by Richard Van Emden is a good read.ISBN 978 1 78303 287 7
CENSUS DATES:
1841 Sunday 6 June. All ages 15 and above should have been rounded down to the nearest 5 year multiple, i.e. ages shown as 15 may be 15-19, ages shown as 20 may be 20-24, etc. Another point to remember for ages is that people often said that they "were in their 60th year" meaning that they had passed their 59th birthday. If a person gave information meaning they were in their 60th year, they will be shown as being 60, whereas strictly keeping to the rules, they should be recorded as 55.
1851 Sunday 30 March
1861 Sunday 7 April
1871 Sunday 2 April
1881 Sunday 3 April
1891 Sunday 5 April
1901 Sunday 31 March
1911 Sunday 2nd April (including anyone who arrived in the dwelling on the morning of Monday 3rd April and was not enumerated elsewhere). This is the first census available to the general public showing the original forms.
For the other census, mentioned above, it must be remembered that many of our ancestors could neither read nor write. The Enumerator left forms with them but when he collected them, often he would have to fill them in on their behalf. The Enumerator then had to transfer all this information into Enumerator Books and these are the documents that we are able to access throughwebsites like Ancestry.com and Findmypast. The original forms were subsequently destroyed, so there is plenty of room for error.
