About Memon Tanzania Tree
Asalaamualaikum !

I immigrated to Toronto,Canada in 1993 with my wife Rabiya and my two children Khatija and Mustaqim from Dar es salaam, Tanzania. I was born in Zanzibar, the last of 8 siblings to Omer Kassam and Khatija Haji Abdulla.

Memons from Sindh,Kathiawar and Kutch emigrated to East and South Africa in the 18th century. The majority of Memons from Kutch settled in Zanzibar and were hence called Kutchi Memons.I have provided interesting links on the history of Memons. The Kutchi Memons are made up of various groupings .We have the Suriyas, Mithaiwallas, Machiaras, Bhakalis, Lakdawallas, Lakhanis and many more.

These group names were basically derived from the trades they were in and so on. After the Zanzibar Revolution in 1964 most of the community members moved to mainland Tanzania and others to Kenya and other countries in Europe and America.

The Family Tree was the brainchild of my brother Abdulrauf Omer Kassam who had requested our uncle Tayib Haji Abdulla when he visited him in London to write on a big sheet of paper the names of the Haji Abdulla Family in a tree format. Thanks to Abdulrauf Omer Kassam who started this project and gave me the papers prepared by our uncle. I started the Family Tree in 2002 and began to organize the data on my computer.

The hand written tree basically comprised of the Haji Abdulla family and included all of my family. I set out to include my father’s side of the family in the tree I was building and came to the realization that by connecting the Haji Abdulla and the Suriya families, I was now adding the Machiaras, Bhakalis, Mithaiwallas, Lakhas, Dadas and many more because of the relationships built through marriages. In essence I was adding all the Memons from the Zanzibar Memon community, most of whom moved to Mainland Tanzania.

My Tree is therefore the Memon Tanzania Tree and I set up the website in September, 2014 to enable all of us to access and know the members of our Memon Community. This site will enable our future generations to trace their roots and it is my sincere hope that you will help us to build this Tree by providing data inputs, photo uploads and corrections when you visit the site.
HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY. HAPPY MEMON DAY

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
