About Taming The Tree
Welcome to Taming the Tree. This site represents a never ending quest to find all the leaves, branches, roots, and dirt of my family tree. It is constantly updated with new information. Some mistakes may also be corrected as time goes by. So, check back as things will constantly be changing. I welcome all contributions and feedback on these pages. During your visit, please, sign my guest book; and, let me know what you think of everything.

The site also has contributors other than myself. I have been blessed enough to have found some long lost 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins who will also be contributing to these pages from time to time; and, I hope to find more. I am really looking forward to this joint effort; and to re-connecting our families!

The Story Tellers

We are the chosen. My feelings are that in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors; to put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story, and to feel that somehow, they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts, but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the Story Tellers of the Tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So we do.

In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors: You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt, somehow, there was love there for me? I cannot say.

It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who I am and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are the bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish; how they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us; that we might be born who we are; that we might remember them. So we do; with love and caring, scribing each fact of their existence; because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family story tellers.

That is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those, young and old, to step up and put flesh on the bones.

MORE TAMING THE TREE.......

I am beginning to add a new section which will be the recreation of a website I once had entitled "More Taming the Tree." It is going to take a while to create it once again. Today there are just 61 pages in the "Stories" section, under "People" at the top of the page. This will be complete with any documents or pictures that I have. To see the full sized images, one must click on the thumbnails that appear on each story page. Please check under the "Stories" section of the site for this new content.

NOTE:
Please remember that genealogy is an on-going adventure; and one is never done with their family tree. There are errors sometimes made in the process. This is why I constantly try to obtain copies of original documents. It is also why I update this site constantly and at the beginning of every month; making any changes and adding new information.

I am beginning to add many PDF files which now appear under the Media Tab/Files as well as under the names of those whom they reference. This will be steadily growing as I have many files to add. So, check back periodically.

Don't forget to check out the albums under the Photos Section, too. Pictures are being added daily. Today, one hundred forty-seven albums are available. This number will be growing steadily. Each album will have a theme such as cemetery tombstones, old homesteads, family, and tales of old. Please be sure to click on the small pictures so you will see the larger version complete with notes and stories.

All content here is meant to be shared for the enjoyment of others only.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
