About North & South

PLEASE NOTE THE LAST PARAGRAPH OF THIS SECTION

This site is so named since my mother's family originated in the NORTH of England on Merseyside, and my father's in the SOUTH, on the Solent.

The research has been done mainly on the internet, but also with visits to Winchester Record Office to look at Titchfield Parish Registers, and The National Archives at Kew. A lot of information has come from family members "found" through this hobby. Some branches have proved fruitful, others - especially the two sets of Irish great grandparents - one on each side - (COWLEY and CARROLL) are currently "brick walls". If you have any information which may help fill any gap, please let me know.

The two main family centres are WALLASEY, Cheshire, in the North, and TITCHFIELD, Hampshire, in the South.

In Wallasey the main family is LEDSHAM, with the HORSFALL and CARROLL families close behind - these are my mother's female line; her father's line is PRESCOTT, found mainly on the opposite bank of the Mersey in the Liverpool area, although most of the Horsfalls were from Liverpool too. These families were in those areas for all the 18th and 19th centuries, the earliest record being 1655 (George Bennett)

The main families in the South are REED, FIELDER, and CAWTE in Titchfield, from 1700, these are my father's paternal line, and COWLEY, FLOAT and CUTBUSH in the Kent area; these are my father's maternal line.

EVERYONE in this tree - except husbands and wives who "married in" - can be traced back to an ancestor held in common with myself.

Because I don't know every exact date,(and try not to collect too many certificates!) where a full date is shown it may be the baptism date, especially pre-1837. However, I have had some exact dates from other family researchers, and now of course full dates of birth can be found on the 1939 register. Where just a month is shown, this will be the quarter in which the event was registered. Of course, post-1983 registrations have the month of registration not the quarter. The place of birth given may be the registration district, if no exact information is known.

Enjoy your visit - and please sign the guest book!

I am adding this comment since I have discovered several of my family photo's on other sites - and they can only have come from here. I do not mind sharing - but it is surely just common politeness to ask first ? When you share on an open site others can also use a photo - this site is private and protected and I was quite upset to see a picture of my parents on an un-protected site.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
