OUR BOARDMAN FAMILY: emigrated to the Eastern Cape from Lancashire. The Reverend William Boardman MA BD (Oxon) resigned his post as headmaster of the Blackburn Grammar School in December 1819, when he accepted the appointment of chaplain to the Settlers, and sailed in the ship "La Belle Alliance" for Algoa Bay together with his wife, Margaret Hayes, and six of his seven children; the eldest son Thomas remaining behind in Blackburn. After boarding the ship on 27th January 1820, it was not until a month later that the La Belle Alliance was finally able to leave its moorings at Deptford due to ice, and head for the open sea. They arrived in Algoa Bay on 2nd May 1820 after three months at sea. The party of Settlers was led by Thomas Willson, who absconded soon after landing at Algoa Bay. The leadership of the party was taken over by the Rev. William Boardman. In 1824, he opened a grammar school in the Bathurst Drostdy. He died in 1825 and was buried at his location in Beaufort Vale. Site of burial is unknown as the land has been ploughed over. Remains of his wattle and daub home can still be seen on the farm "Pinedon" in the Bathurst district. MORE FAMILY HISTORY AND STORIES can be found under PEOPLE/STORIES.....

A PRAYER FOR GENEALOGISTS
Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time.
That I might find the roots that made
     This family tree of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
      on which my fathers trod.
And led them through so many lands
       To find our present sod.

Lord, Help me find an ancient book
        or dusty manuscript.
That's safely hidden now away
        In some forgotten crypt.
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
my soul when I can't find.
The missing link between some name
That ends the same as mine.
                                ...CURTIS WOODS
