About Virginia to Missouri Wilkinsons
This Family Tree begins with Thomas Wilkinson (abt 1770 to after 1850) and Martha “Patsy” Segar (1775 to 1844).

There are stories about 5 brothers coming to America from Europe usually England or Norway by way of England. Some are more colorful than others. When they cannot find work together they go separate ways and never see each other again.

Many people say we are their descendants in some way. That could be true but we have not found written documents to support that theory. So this tree begins with Thomas and Martha and their children.

The majority of our research has been on those who traveled to Missouri and beyond.

Noel Wilkinson and Glen Wilkinson started the tree with their relatives who were descendants of James Stanley Wilkinson who was a son of Thomas.

Noel wrote the following, which is included in their original family tree book:

"When I visited Virginia in 1975, I found many of our ancestors had settled in and around Hillsville Va. John Alderman, an old attorney in Hillsville, told me that it had been handed down to him by word of mouth that the descendants (ancestors) of Thomas Wilkinson were living in the Carolinas during the Revolutionary War. As they did not want to choose either side during the war, they were considered as Tories. The people of Carolina made it too hard on them and they left and came to Virginia."

The information about the Carolinas has not been proven but may be true. Thomas and Martha’s first daughter, Mary “Polly” Wilkinson (abt 1798 to 1855), indicated she was born in NC on the 1850 census.

Information in this tree before 1850 is by word of mouth or information found on Ancestry.com in family trees created by others people looking for the same families.

Newer information (since 1850) is more accurate and usually documented by census, marriage or death records which are available on Ancestry.com.

Besides Noel and Glen this tree has been tended by "Aunt Pearl" (Bertha Pearl Johnmeyer Wilkinson).
After Noel and Glen completed the original tree for years she has carefully added to her book. Birth, deaths, marriages and more have been documented into her tree. She has the most complete book I know of. I borrowed her precious book about 15 years ago and updated my digital tree.

The other two people who have added their touches to the tree are Dauna Wilkinson and myself. Dauna has contributed on the entire family but especially on her ancestor’s family of her great- grandfather, Tildon Joshua Wilkinson. She has put in much effort and time in her study of the family.

Finally it is with much pride, I have taken care of the tree for many years and researched my great-grandfather, Alexander; great-great grandfather, James Stanley and all the other children of Thomas and Martha. In the early 1980's Dauna and I typed the original printed family tree into “Family Tree Maker” software. Since the world wide web became available our research has been aided by Ancestry.com.

At the 100th family reunion in 2005 Dauna and I met and exchanged our trees. I merged the two trees into one with the "Family Tree Maker" software. That is the origin of this digital tree.

The search is on going. If you find errors or have new facts to share you can send me an email and it will be corrected or added. I have many pictures to add and each one will help tell our story.

Like a family, the tree keeps growing with new leaves and branches.
