About History of the Walker Family and Their Kindred by Glennis Walker
Please sign in to see more.
The information for this site includes the book by Glennis Walker named:

THE HISTORY OF THE WALKER FAMILY 1734 - 1990 & THEIR KINDRED WITH RELATED INCIDENTS

So many people have contacted me on other genealogy sites requesting information on Glennis' book. The book was never "published" and Glennis only had a certain number of books printed and sold to family members. There are no known books available for sale. Glennis has since passed away and he had no children. I found the name of the printing company that printed out the last known books in early 2000's, but it is no longer in business.

Since there is so much information in his book, I thought I would put his information on a Tribal Pages Family tree. It is a "work in progress". It took Glennis 20 years to compile and create his book, and I know it will take me several months to get most of the information input and cross-referenced. I DID NOT have a proof-reader, so I'm sure there will be some mistakes. I am now in the process of taking a second pass through the book. If you see a typo or incorrect family link, please let me know.

Although I completed inputting Glennis' book into this online site in June 2016, I have continued research and applied more names that are linked to people in his book. With information obtained from other sites and family members, I was also able to find more ancestors, dead and alive, from obituaries I have found as well. I also found an extended branch of the Sizemore Cherokee Indian Tribe, linked to Walker blood lines.

Glennis' book noted approximately 11,750 names, but many names were repeated in several places in the book as being married in other branches of the Walker Family, so that number has been rounded down. I completed my first audit of all the input names in July, 2018 to other websites and extended research, which added additional unrecognized family members in Glennis' book, and the total names at the end of that audit was 19,629. I began my second audit in August, 2018. I will continue to add to the tree as long as I find relatives, or with those submitted by family members, that I can link to an ancestor, but still staying within the cut-off date already specified by Glennis' book. - BGH
                      ------------------------------------------

On his first page Glennis writes: (I QUOTE)

"THE HISTORY OF THE WALKER FAMILY - IN RETROSPECT"

"AS I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO COMPILE GENEALOGY AND INFORMATION FOR A WALKER FAMILY HISTORY, I REALIZE I SHOULD HAVE STARTED THIS ACCUMULATIVE WRITING MANY YEARS BEFORE I DID. AS I FACE THE OBSCURE, I AM BESIEGED WITH FAR MORE DISTRACTIONS, AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PORTRAY EVERYTHING IN ITS BEST PERSPECTIVE. HOWEVER, NOW AT THE AGE OF SEVENTY FIVE YEARS, I HAVE HAD TO RELINQUISH MANY ILLUSIONS OF YOUTH, AND PERHAPS I COULD MANAGE TO DEAL IN ONE MORE DISILLUSION. I REALLY HAD NOT ANTICIPATED GETTING INTO HISTORY THIS EXTENSIVELY, AND IF THERE HAD BEEN A WALKER FAMILY HISTORY IN EXISTENCE, BELIEVE ME, I WOULD NEVER HAVE FELT INCLINED TO UNDERTAKE SUCH AN OVERWHELMING ENTERPRISE.
I HAVE EXHAUSTED EVERY SOURCE OF INFORMATION I HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF, HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE EXPRESSED IT IN A MORE PRESENTABLE MANNER, BUT TIME DOESN'T ALLOW FOR THAT. I TRUST THE READER WILL OVERLOOK MY TYPOGRAPHICAL, PARAGRAPHICAL AND PUNCTUATION ERRORS, AND BE CONTENT TO FOREGO FORMALITY FOR FACT. DURING THE TWENTY YEARS I HAVE SPENT WORKING ON THIS HISTORY, OCCASIONALLY SOMEONE WOULD SAY, ""WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO GET THROUGH?"" WELL, I AM THROUGH.

 (UNQUOTE)

                        -------------------------------------------

The last name listed on Page 725 of Glennis' book is that of Virginia Pearl Lilly, daughter of William Pendleton Lilly and Valeria Walker Lilly. At the end of her listing Glennis notes: QUOTE: This completes the family of William P. and Valeria E. Walker Lilly. This also completes this Walker Family History. As my great-great-great-great-grandfather Jacob Peters would most likely say, "I bid you suf Weidersehen." Glennis R. Walker - UNQUOTE. I can only say that when I finished the last entry of Virginia Pearl Lilly and typed those last lines, after two months of input, I can almost imagine how elated Glennis and his wife must have felt when they typed that last page. It really was an over-whelming experience.

Glennis not only spent HOURS at local courthouses and libraries looking for information, he spent YEARS digging through court records, birth, death and marriage certificates, newspapers and microfiche making family links, all before computers and the internet were available to him. Imagine looking for 725 pages of family genealogy on microfilm. It is amazing! Throughout his book he tells stories of how our Walker ancestors were trailblazers in southern West Virginia, making history throughout Mercer and Raleigh Counties.

To this day Walker is a very prominent name throughout that land. Walker names appear on courthouse monuments, street names and cemeteries. Incidents during the Civil War link Walkers to famous battlefields, including Gettysburg, under several famous Generals.

Glennis' dedication to our family history is a gift to all of us and hopefully by having it here on Tribal Pages, his work can reach many, many more that didn't have the opportunity of possessing one of his books.

                       ---------------------------------------------------

NOTE: ALL THE NAMES AND WORK FROM GLENNIS' BOOK UP TO THE YEAR 1993 ARE ON THIS TREE. I KNOW, THE TITLE ONLY GOES TO 1990, BUT THERE ARE SEVERAL INCIDENTS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK THAT HAPPENED UP TO 1993, SO THAT'S WHERE I'LL MAKE THE CUT-OFF. I HAVE FOUND, AND MADE, CORRECTIONS/ADDITIONS THROUGH RELATIVES I HAVE MET ON FIND A GRAVE OR FROM OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA. WORK DONE AFTER 1993 IS FROM INFORMATION I HAVE OBTAINED THROUGH VARIOUS SOURCES. PLEASE HELP ME KEEP THIS INFORMATION UP-TO- DATE BY SUBMITTING YOUR FAMILY CHANGES TO ME.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IT, YOU CAN FORWARD THE INFORMATION TO ME OR A COPY OF THEIR OBITUARY AND I WILL CREATE ONE. I WILL THEN POST THEIR FIND A GRAVE MEMORIAL NUMBER HERE ON THEIR PAGE.

I get excited when I discover another branch, limb or leaf of our tree. I take a journey through the lives of ancestor I never knew and of "cousins" I will never meet. As I travel through their generations, I read the stories and obituaries to get the information I need to create their pages and find so many fascinating details, as well as tragedies, in their lives. One name can lead to hundreds of other names and up to five generations. Sometimes I have to set back and catch my breath when I see that one man and wife lost 4 children at the time of their births, or lost several children or their mate to the Spanish Flu, or the wife that lost her husband in a war. One woman lost her husband, son and two nephews in a car accident. The losses are devastating and I sometimes wonder where they found the strength to carry on.

It took me several weeks to input all of the children, and generations coming forward, of Richard "Dickey" Wood. I personally am related to him 3 ways through both sides of my family.

Finally making the link to Pocohantas on this tree was a great feat. Glennis had tried to link her, but it ends up that she is related by marriage to the Walker Family, not by blood.

I will carry on with my research for as long as I can and hopefully I can find someone to carry on from there.

ONE OF THESE DAYS YOUR 3X GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN MIGHT BE LOOKING FOR YOU, AND HOPEFULLY THEY CAN FIND YOU RIGHT HERE!!

Here is a guest book entry I received from Mike Walker, son of Erie Walker and nephew of Glennis Walker that I want to share:

Mike Walker ( mailto:mike930tx@gmail.com ) has just signed your guestbook.

----------------------------------
Thank you, Beverly, for putting this site together for all of us to enjoy. I remember as a child my uncle Glennis always talking about our ancestors, and telling (and retelling) stories about them and
their lives. He always seemed to have 3x5 cards in his shirt pockets with notes on them from the people he met and places he had been. Thank the good Lord that he finished his great work before passing on. When he did, my dad, Erie Walker, picked up the torch and had my uncle Glennis' book reprinted many time over and seemed to always be shipping it out to some unknown member of our expansive family. Again, thank you Bev, for putting this website together for all to appreciate my uncle Glennis' hard, exhaustive work, but most of all so that generations to come can know who they are, and remember those that came before them.
 ----------------------------------

Feb. 17, 2017 - Thanks Mike, you are the closest relative of Glennis that we have contact with. - BGH
(Sadly, Mike passed away in July, 2019)

              ********************************************************************

APRIL, 2018 - Thanks to Glennis' work that led me to put his book online, connections were made via Find A Grave whereas I was contacted by a F.A.G. contributor stating that her daughter-in-law's grandfather was in Glennis' book, and indeed he was - Gary Lawson. About a year later this same contributor contacted me stating there was a young man (54 years young) looking for his father, a man he never met and had been looking for since he was 11 years old. To make a very long story short, I contacted this young man, Roy Beach, with information that led to the fact, that indeed, he found his father, my first cousin, Charles Mills. If it had not been for Glennis writing this book and my putting it online, this connection may have not ever been made, or if and when it had, it may have been too late. Now, father and son are spending time together and getting to know each other and actually live within a few hours drive of each other. During my trip to WVA in July, 2018 for family reunions, I was surprised by Roy and his wife, Trisha. Those are hugs I will never forget!
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As of April 2, 2019, there are 22,527 names on the tree. This was after completely entering all the children of Richard "Dickey" Wood and their families coming forward to 1993 - BGH

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
