About Te Whanau a Wihongi
2015 Update: Kia ora whanau... it is so good to be back in these pages having been locked out when my email address changed. Its practically been a few years of emails requesting administrator access with my new email address but well worth the fight getting back in. My apologies if you have been waiting for replies, edits or access to the site. So as you can probably guess theres a lot of updates to be added and so I will do my best to find out dates, new additions to families and important milestones as well as upload new photos.

Never before in all my years of having an interest in Whakapapa have I seen so many new sites, tools and applications with information sharing at its best. Virtual cememteries, sites that allow photo/audio/stories and document sharing alongside of family history. So many of us are connecting family lines through these new sites. Sites such as:

myheritage.com
 billongraves.com
 Findmypast.com
 Ancestry.com
 whakapapa.maori.org.nz
 familytreecircles.com

So much at our fingertips. I will be updating the photos shortly over the next month or so but feel free to add some. Please feel free to forward any updates of information and family lines. Even panui for reunions etc can forwarded. Lets reignite the spark and continue on. Look forward to hearing from you.

Kia ora whanau,

It has certainly been a while since the site was updated but looking at getting this polished up for the new year 2011. THank you to all those who have taken the time to sign the guestbook and also leaving your contact details. Just wanted you to know to "watch this space" as we connect more whanau over the year and leave footsteps for others to follow. Looking at updating the photos in a little while so keep tapping back to visit the site. Remember you can email me any additions and I will gladly update our pages.

The surname WIHONGI came from our common ancestor Wiremu Hongi TE RIPI. We are searching for all of his descendants.

The site name was amended by David TE RATA and we will be forever indebted to Melanie HILLAM for all the work it to not only took to get this site to where it is today, but inspire others to have their own sites.

To those of you who have also contributed your whanau information a big thank you and an invitation to drop in regularly and see whats new. And speaking of which it is my please to accept the invitation to be the new whanau administrator to this site.

Please let me know if there are any additions or corrections that need to be made to your line (there will probably be heaps of mistakes - they are not intended to offend). Slowly I am going through each line and making corrections. To speed this up just email me any additions and I will add them to the site...ie marriages, children, death dates etc.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
