About The Woodcocks of Winfarthing
Please sign in to see more. Hello there. I've created this tree at TribalPages in the hopes of endeavouring to stretch the tree back further in time past what we know of our earliest ancestor, James WOODCOCK who was born in 1777 Winfarthing, Norfolk, England and married Mary CULLUM on the 14th of December 1802 at St.Mary the Virgin, Winfarthing, Norfolk, England. It is here that they raised a large family of four daughters and five sons, namely Harriet, James, Mary, Emily, Job, Israel, Ann, Ephraim, and Ezra WOODCOCK.
NOTE: The Woodcock (bird), is said to have started the surname. Legend says that a dealer of game in London kept a large suppy of the game bird on hand. It was a delicacy and the people did not know what to call the dealer so they called him "Mr. Woodcock". The dealer did not object as long as the people purchased his birds at a good price. Interestingly, I have also found a street in Norfolk/Norwich called 'Woodcock Road'. And on Norfolk Museums & Archeaolgy Service there are several places names with Woodcock mentioned: Woodcock Bottom, Oxborough; Woodcock Corner, Holt and Lynford; Woodcock Farm, Wiggenhall, St Germans; Woodcock Hall, Saham Toney; Woodcock Hill, Cotessey; Woodcock Hill, Hockham; Woodcock Hill, Swanton Abbott; Woodcock Wood, Sandringham; Woodcock's Lane, Great Melton.

Found an ancient Petition to the Kings in the time of the Dark Ages, in which a Roger Wodcok petitioned the King after he had his ear cut off in the years 1448-1451.
