From what I'm seeing in records and articles there must have been some type falling out between Charles O. & his father Stokes. He may have run away or was thrown out or removed from the family.

I think the reason only "John" is listed for name of father is the assumption his last name was "Fitzhugh" with "Young" being the maiden name for Mary. You appear to have made the assumption John's last name is "Young" same as Mary's. It is not. It appears John's last name is "Holt".

On Charles O's obit for 1949 he is listed as the beloved son of Jane Fitzhugh; four sisters and foster mother & father Mr. & Mrs. John J. Holt. So it appears the Holts took him in as a foster child. Also note no mention of his father in the obit even though he didn't die until 1971 in NY.

If you look at the United States Headstone Applications for U.S. Military Veterans it was Mrs. Mary Holt who applied for it.

Stokes P. FitzHugh Stokes P FitzHugh, 80, of 169 Mam St , died Wednesday. Born in Dover, Tenn., Dec. 19, 1890, he was the son of J E and Nannie Turner Sartin FitzHugh He had made his home in Poughkeepsie since 1964.
Mr FitzHugh was a self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jane Bush; three daughters, Mrs. Roy Tigart, Clarksville, Tenn ; Mrs. Daisy Wilson, Ventura, Calif , and Mrs. John Burgin III, Poughkeepsie; seven greatrgrandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Stokes, Clarksville; Mrs. Ethel Landchester, Craig, Colo., and Mrs. Elsie Rasman, in Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Mc Comae Funeral Home, 20 Smith St., tonight and Friday, 7 to 9 oclock. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a m. at the funeral home. Dr. M. Lawrence Snow will officiate. Burial will be 1b the Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
