~ AN OLDE IRISH BLESSING ~ May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

AN IRISH LULLABY By J. R. Shannon ~ 1913 Over in Killarney, Many years ago, Me Mither sang this song to me In tones so sweet and low. Just a simple little ditty, in her good "ould" Irish way, And I'd give the world If she could sing that song to me today. Too-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-li Too-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-li Too-ra-loo-ral, That's an Irish lullaby. Oft, in dreams I wander, to that cot again, I feel her arms a-huggin' me As when she told me then. And I hear her voice a hummin' to me As in those days of yore, When she used to rock me fast asleep Outside the cabin door. Too-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-li, Too-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-li, Too-ra-loo-ral, That's an Irish lullaby. ~~ AN OLD IRISH BLESSING ~~ May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home. May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam.

May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures. May all life's passing seasons bring the best to your and yours!

"Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see." ~ Unknown-1850's

While searching for Emma (CLARK)JOHNSON, Eva's mother, I found her birth date as follows: 1881 Canada Census: Emma born 1874, age 7, school; 1891 Canada Census: Emma born 1874, age 17, pianist; Marriage Certificate 1899: born 1877, age 22; Eva had her birthday written down as 17 February 1878; and the Obituary dated 1956 - born 1879, age 77. She was somewhere between 77 and 82 years old when she died. Always young at heart. Well, I'm certain that most of this information is accurate, let's say 95% accurate. However, it doesn't take much to climb into the wrong tree!

Our ancestors, who were colonists, pioneers and settlers, had courage and a sense of adventure. They also had a vision for a new and better life for their families. Johannes "John" ROOT, age 16, was indentured to an "old Quaker" for passage from Germany in 1790. He served 2 years to gain his freedom.
George HULL, sailed from England to New England (became Massachusetts) in 1630. His wife joined him later.
John JOHNSTON his wife and first three children sailed from Ireland to Canada West (became Ontario) in 1837.
William ACHESON sailed from Ireland to Canada West (became Ontario) in 1850. This was the time of the Great Potato Famine in Ireland). His wife joined him later that year.
Robert CLARK was born in Scotland in 1828, the date of his emigration is unknown.

GATES colonists sailed from England in the early 1600's.
However, our research hasn't taken us back any further than Oliver Uriah GATES, born in Connecticut in 1802.

Still searching!
Warren Addison GATES with his wife and children, including our father Floyd Jacob GATES emigrated from Kansas to Saskatchewan 1923. See "IMMIGRATION" below for more details.

Welcome to aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, third cousins,
and any other relatives who come to visit.

The GATES sisters ~ Pat, Carole and Susan. Copies of photos and other documents are always welcome. I became more interested in genealogy just before Eva's 90th birthday on 8th March 2003. I managed to 'borrow' her address book and contacted as many relatives as possible. Many sent Birthday Wishes, as well as some lovely old photos. Her gift was a large Memory Album. Thanks continue to all family members who made that possible.

In 1969, Eva and Floyd were given a book by Floyd's cousins, Wilfred & Alice GATES, who lived in Milden."LOOKING BACK 1905-1965: The History of the Milden Community;" Published by The Milden Historical Committee; 1966. In 1989, Eva was given a 35 page handwritten family tree: "Oliver Uriah GATES 1801-1882 and
Catharine HULL WEBB GATES 1800-1875 and Their Descendants;"

compiled by Leila Belle GATES GREENALL; August 1984, updated 1986 and 1988. Leila was a first cousin of Floyd's. They grew up in what was know as the "Rural Municipality of Milden," incorporated in 1911. The first homesteaders arrived in early 1900. George and Emma JOHNSON arrived in 1905. Milden became a prosperous farming community. There are still members of the GATES family living there. Leila did her research the 'old' and probably more interesting way, travelling from Milden, Saskatchewan to Beattie and Sabetha, Kansas. Visiting relatives; searching family bibles and records; searching public records; and sharing what she had recorded. She also visited Eva in Burnaby in about 1996. Leila Belle GATES GREENALL was born in 1904 and died in 2002.
In February 2010, I (Carole) received an email from W. GATES, nephew of Leila Belle (GATES) GREENALL. Attached was a copy of "THE GENERATIONS OF THE ROOT FAMILY ~ John ROOT 1774-1846 from GERMANY and Barbara LANE 1780-1837" The ten handwritten pages were compiled by Leila Belle (GATES) GREENALL, in 1982. Leila visited with Violet Pearl (ROOT) HANDLEY, great great granddaughter of John ROOT and Barbara LANE. Violet lived in Beattie, Marshall County, Kansas. Leila and Violet visited the cemetery 4 1/2 miles East of Sabetha, Nemaha County, Kansas, where Joel ROOT is buried. Joel ROOT was the seventh of thirteen children of John ROOT and Barbara LANE. Joel is our line from John and Barbara. INSCRIPTION FATHER JOEL ROOT DIED DEC 18 1894 AGED 85 YRS 8 MOS 26 DAYS A PRECIOUS ONE FROM US HAS GONE A VOICE WE LOVED IS STILLED A PLACE IS VACANT IN OUR HOME WHICH NEVER CAN BE FILLED GOD IN HIS WISDOM HAS RECALLED THE BOON HIS LOVE HAS GIVEN AND THOUGH HIS BODY SLUMBERS HERE THE SOUL IS SAFE IN HEAVEN Violet was a great granddaughter of Joel ROOT. Leila was a great great granddaughter of Joel ROOT. The sources that Violet provided for Leila were the ROOT Family Bible and the "Brief Sketch of the Life of Jacob ROOT."
In 2003, while researching on the Mormon Church website, I found the name and email address of a cousin (second or third?). She was a relative of George JOHNSON's mother. Mary Jane ACHESON. Among other information, she sent the booklet: "THE ACHESON FAMILY 1850 - 1950" compiled by a ten member family committee, struck in about 1940. Their ten year project was self-published in June 1951. We're fortunate to have documents written by forward-thinking relatives.

IMMIGRATION:
1790 ~ JOHN ROOT ~ "My father's name was John ROOT. He was born (1774) in Snedes, Germany, and came to America when 16 years of age, and was sold to pay his fare across the Ocean to an old Quaker whom he served 2 years for his freedom. My mother's name was Barbara Lane and she was born in Virginia. . . . "
SOURCE: Excerpt from "A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF JACOB ROOT" the autobiography of Jacob ROOT, one of the 12 children of John and Barbara (LANE) ROOT. Sarah Catherine ROOT, great granddaughter of John ROOT and Barbara LANE, would marry Alexander Z. GATES, 2 November 1879 in Brown County, Kansas.

1630 ~ GEORGE HULL
, sailed from England to New England with other colonists, probably aboard the "MARY and JOHN 1630" ship. A passenger list for the "Mary and John 1630" has never been discovered. However, other documents from that period show that he was present at that time. The "Mary and John 1630," landed in what is now know as Dorchester, Massachusetts, on 30 May 1630. This was ten years after the "Mayflower," which had first arrived in 1620.
Catharine HULL, the tenth of twelve children, was a lineal descendant of George HULL. Catharine would marry Oliver Uriah GATES in 1825.

1837 ~ JOHN JOHNSTON and wife CATHERINE RUTLEDGE, sailed to Canada with their first two children, Henry age 5 years, and Ann age 1 year. This family immigrated from Ireland to Canada between the birth of their second child, Ann, born in Ireland sometime in 1836, and the birth of their third child, JOHN, born in Canada sometime in 1837.

Christopher JOHNSTON, the fourth of five children, would marry Mary Jane ACHESON 23rd December 1874.

1850 ~ WILLIAM ACHESON and his brother-in-law, JOHN RUTHERFORD,
bid a last farewell to Ireland on a spring day, 14th April 1850 and arrived in Canada 28 days later, on 12th May 1850. Later in the year, CHRISTINA and MARY, the two FALLIS sisters, set sail for Canada to join their husbands, WILLIAM ACHESON and JOHN RUTHERFORD.

William and Christina's daughter, Mary Jane ACHESON, would marry Christopher JOHNSTON, 23rd December 1874.

1910 & 1922 ELMER HENRY GATES and his wife, LULU GERTRUDE GOIN first immigrated from Beattie, Kansas to Milden, Saskatchewan in about 1910. They returned to Kansas in about 1920, only to finally return to Milden in 1922. Five of their children were born in the United States; the other five were born in Milden, Saskatchewan.

1923 ~ WARREN ADDISON GATES and his wife, ADA MAY MILLER immigrated from Beattie,Kansas to Milden, Saskatchewan in 1923, bringing their four children: Fred Edmund born 1909; FLOYD JACOB (my father) born 1910; Erma Sarah born 1916; and Roy Clell the youngest.

Floyd Jacob GATES would marry Eva Carlotta JOHNSON/JOHNSTON 13th December 1933.
