The Poplar Tent Bradfords site is a service for descendents of David
and Mary Bradford, our earliest known Bradford ancestors in North Carolina.
From Grace Bradford McDowell's book, Descendents of David Bradford: Mecklenburg,
Cabarrus, Iredell Counties:
The first of our line of Bradford's coming to Mecklenburg County, North
Carolina of which there is a record is that of David and Mary Bradford. They
came to Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church, in what is now Cabarrus County, bringing a
church letter from Chanceford Presbyterian Church, Woodbine, York County,
Pennsylvania. This letter is dated February 9, 1769 and reads as follows:
That the Bearer David Bradford and his wife Mary who left these parts between
two and three years ago had lived a considerable number of years in the bounds of
this united congregation, had enjoyed the enlightening priviledges of the church and
in respect of their behavior while here they may be received by any Christian society
where God in his providence has ordered or hereafter may order their lot is certified
with confidence of members of session by Chanceford Congregation.
