About The Sutherd Family
Please sign in to see more. Compilation of the Sutherd Family Data in Virginia, Illinois and England is based on the documents that was found with the following names: Southard, Southworth, Sudduth, Suddarth, Suthard, Sutheard & Sutherd. Documents which have been researched contained sufficient evidence to establish the lines herein. The following data starts with Deborah Brockman B: 29-Sep-1952 Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL., and goes all the back to Orme Fitz Southworth B:961 England. On the Southard, Southworth, Sudduth, Suddarth, Suthard, Sutheard, and Sutherd the generation number is 36. Nothing was found passed the year 961. Some of the information that I used is from The Sutherd/Suthard/Southard Family of Virginia and Cass Co., IL., By Calvin E Sutherd, Boca Raton, Florida October 1977. According to all the research that was done on this family the Southards are all descended from the ancient Southworth family of Somersetshire and Lancashire, England, which derived its name from the Southworth estate in Baroney of Newton. The name Southard seems to have been a Dutch variation of the English families who fled England in the 1500's to escape regligious persecution. They settled in and near Leyden, Holland. In Holland they raised their families intermarried with the Dutch and apdopted the Dutch language. Later some of their decendants came to America. some settled in New England, while others settled in Long Island, N. Y. and Virginia. In America the name is found spelled Southard, Southworth, Sudduth, Suddarth, Suthard, Sutheard, and Sutherd. There is a great similiarity in all areas of Colonial America of the spelling of the given names of the males, such as John, Joseph, Isaac, Elias, Moses, Robert, Benjamin, Thomas, George, Calvin and William. The Progenton of the Virginia Southards of the 18th Century was Thomas Henry Southard B: 1615 Leyden, South Holland, and D: between 1688 and 1890 in Livingston, N. Y. The information enclosed has been complied over the last 4 years. Thanks to my Grandfather Russell Sutherd for giving me alot of information and still remembering everything at the age of 99. When Grandpa Russell would talk about the Sutherd's he new them by their middle names only, I soon found out that was very true when doing the research. When researching the Census they did mostly use there middle name. Also Thanks to my Mom Beverly (Sutherd) Brockman for giving me alot of information and for the Sutherd pictures and to all the other relatives that was willing to share information with me Thanks. I have done my best to document what I have, to try to make sure what I have is accurate but I just want you to know that there will be mistakes but not intentionally. What I'm trying to say is there will be mistakes, expect them but also expect that there is probably alot of truth in what you read also. On the Lyons side of the family we do have Cherokee Indian Blood from the Rainwater side of the family and we also had a Famous Singer & Songwriter Marvin Rainwater (7-2-25 - 9-17-2013). However if you do know of a correction please send it to me and help me keep this up to date. I hope all enjoy the family history. By: Deborah S. (Brockman) Brown Lakeland, FL. 12 May
