About Family in the Margins

Hi - My name is Shani and for the last few months I have been leading a Writing Group called the Cedar Writers located in Knowle, Bristol. Part of our remit was to write about our family trees, so I thought it would be useful to actually research mine!
To quote Nigella Lawson I have always operated a "scorched earth policy" when it comes to living - my mother had large parts of her family she wouldn't talk about, and those she did recognise don't seem to have existed according to the history books - the same applied to my father. So when my own family came along, I related to them things I had been told as fact, and if they disputed it, well prove it - was my usual reply.
So in my usual fashion, I decided to take the "bull by the horns" and embarked on an incredible journey. I have found costermongers, miners, servants,"bawdy house" owners to name but a few. Their stories documented by the census and in many cases the timelines do coincide with some the events I was told they were engaged in.... No wonder I am a fiction writer - you couldn't make this stuff up.
If you find this site by accident, and you have any knowledge to add, please do feel free to contact me.
 Best wishes Shani

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
